Profile

Sue Baptiste is a full Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Science, Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Professor Baptiste completed her professional program in occupational therapy in England and shortly after graduation, emigrated to Canada where she has stayed throughout her career.

Sue is known particularly for her work as one of a team of six occupational therapists who developed the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), an outcome measure used in over 35 countries and translated into 24 languages at last count. In addition, she has consulted around the world in curriculum development and problem-based learning, working with many professions including medicine, dentistry, naturopathy, chiropractic, physiotherapy, nursing, veterinary medicine and several others.

Professor Baptiste carries over $4million research funds over the past four years as principal or co-principal investigator, with the main focus on working with internationally educated health professionals to enable a smoother transition into their professions in Canada. She is very committed to enhancing cross-cultural understanding.

Sue is on the Board of the Canadian Occupational Therapy Foundation, assisting in raising funds for research focused upon occupational therapy applications. Currently, Professor Baptiste is the President-Elect for the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists, becoming President on October 1st, 2010 and the alternate Canadian delegate to the Council of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

Fun Fact

Sue’s greatest pleasures include traveling with her husband, walking her dog and reading up to five books a week with the help of a glass of good wine and a warm fire.

Sue aims to supervise one new student each year; modest amounts of research funds are often available to support student involvement.
